Shouters who they regard as a heretical or extremist off-shoot. However, there are undoubtedly born-again Christians in the movement. Many other house-church evangelicals regard the Born Again people as very extreme, at the least. (This is the view I myself take.) They insist on weeping as a mark of true repentance and attendance at secret ‘New Life meetings.’ Mainstream evangelicals are usually criticised for not being genuinely ‘born again’ (which is often patently false.) They are divisive and split churches – one house-church I visited in Hainan had only 12 people left; nearly 200 (including all the young people) had been lured away by the Bom Again preachers. In December 2003 a house-church leader in China wrote a letter making out a good case that many of the leaders of the Born Again movement are very ‘orthodox’ even Reformed in their theology but in practice they wink at serious extremes even heresies being widely practiced at grass-roots level.

The Fangcheng church led by Brother Z. is charismatic. It is seen as divisive and sheep-stealing by mainstream house-church evangelicals in China. Some house-church leaders have serious questions about Zhang’s relationship with his female co-worker and his lack of financial accountability.

The China Gospel Fellowship which has been under severe persecution in recent years is generally regarded as mainstream evangelical and more orthodox than the groups above-mentioned. I am not able to comment on the two large groups based in Anhui.

UNITY

From all this is can be seen that the ‘unity’ proclaimed overseas is only paper-thin and serious questions need to be asked about some of the larger groups. With such serious divergences in doctrine and practice what will be the Gospel proclaimed overseas? Will prospective missionaries be asked to sign a statement of faith? Who will select candidates and ensure proper Biblical and theological training?

Much hinges on the unity of these reportedly huge house-church movements to work together. Yet privately BTJ leaders admit that the the Sinim fellowship which is supposed to coordinate BTJ in China is no longer meeting regularly. There is much disunity among the seven groups supposedly cooperating. The Born Again movement formerly led by Brother Y.has now split five ways with his sister trying to maintain a precarious hold on authority over one of the split groups. Brother Y. has been in America for several years. Brother X. has not been in China, I believe, for 5 years. Brother Z. I was told in January has been disowned by many of his co-workers of the Fangcheng church for his immorality although a minority still keep in touch. So this church is now split, too. So how can these handful of leaders now travelling widely
