businessmen. Chinese Christian businessmen are moving into Myanmar and asking for advice on how to evangelise Buddhists. TSPM students and teaching staff are interested in genuine BTJ evangelism. House-church people have already ’emigrated” to remote parts of China for the Gospel’s sake. I was told recently of 2 families who had seyttled in a village in Xinjiang and have won some of their Uygur Muslim neighbours to Christ. A house-church evangelist I know in Yunnan has been invited to cross the border into Vietnam to do discipleship training. House-church people have moved to settle in Mongolia. Mainland Christians converted or in training abroad are catching a vision for mission. In many ways cross-cultural mission is already happening. It may be quiet and small-scale but it has great potential. If watered and allowed to grow it may develop into a major missions movement as in Korea. But if hijacked and artificially force-fed with cash from overseas, manipulated and controlled by dubious techniques it will wither and die.
It is unlikely that anyone can single-handedly stop or divert the hyped-up BTJ bandwagon from careering onwards. But it may be possible for those who agree with what I have written to develop contacts with house-church leaders and encourage them to train their people for urban evangelism and then the long-term training necessary for fruitful cross-cultural mission. We need great wisdom to discern what is of God in this very diverse BTJ movement and what is merely carnal. God is sovereign and He can work all things together for good.
