How can BTJ be promoted and encouraged in a manner to glorify God and lead to fruitful evangelism?

I propose the following as a realistic program:

1) The rural house-churches should be encouraged to concentrate on consolidating their own churches and training their people Biblically and ensuring a succession of young leaders.

2) As the tide of urban migration increases, house-churches both in the countryside and cities should concentrate on equipping recent migrants to the cities and prospective migrants still in the rural areas to survive and evangelise effectively in China’s cities.

3) The BTJ vision should be preached not to eclipse the huge need of China’s 1.2 billion unevangelised people but growing out of the larger need of China’s unreached millions.

4) Gifted young people should be encouraged to prove themselves in urban evangelism.(which they will need if they go overseas.)

5) Those who have proved themselves in leadership (after some years) may be encouraged to seek God’s direction for going out to Muslim, Tibetan or tribal areas within China. They will need specialised training

6) Those who have proved themselves in cross-cultural evangelism to Muslims (especially) within China may then be encouraged to seek God about going ‘Back to Jerusalem’ to work in Muslim (or other) evangelism in Central Asia, the Middle East etc. Intensive and long-term specialised training will be needed.

7) The focus for prospective missionaries from China should be educated young people in the cities who have English and language-learning abilities, Biblical and theological knowledge and contact and ease with foreigners.

At present, the BTJ movement being packaged overseas expects uneducated peasants

(1) to go directly into highly specialised missionary work to Muslims (4). This may prove disastrous. The focus should be on equipping 100,000 young rural/migrant workers on fire for Christ to reach China’s cities. The BTJ vision should be preached especially among urban Christians, students and theological students (whether TSPM or house-church) to provide the BTJ movement with educated leadership. Gifted rural Christians may also take part after long-term training but they should not be the main focus (as at present.)

There are signs that mission is already happening much more ‘naturally’ in China than this artificial BTJ movement. Thoughtful, educated Christians are seriously investigating the feasability of sending properly-trained missionaries overseas. One young Beijing house-church leader told me recently that his church had sent out an investigating team to three countries in the Middle East (including Turkey) three years ago. They reported back that they did not think the time was ripe to send out full-time Christian workers to the Middle East from China. Christians in Wenzhou – a highly educated and affluent Christian enclave- have also told me they plan to send out a similar team in the near future and are more optimistic. Wenzhou churches are already sending out preachers all over China including to the minorities. They plan to use their business contacts in the Middle East to set up joint ventures with Muslim
